Ten All-Time Best Microsoft Word Shortcuts Using the Mouse

On another page I described 12 of the best keyboard shortcuts for using Microsoft Word faster and better. But keyboard shortcuts aren't the only ways to be more efficient when writing or editing Word documents. Mouse operations or combinations of mouse and keyboard also have their share of tricks and here are ten that I think are the best. They have been used in Word 2010 but may not all work in older versions.
Use Word better with these Mouse shortcuts
- Quick way to highlight large amounts of text—This is a standard general method for text selection and is well-known but it is too useful not to mention it here. The procedure involves a mouse and keyboard combination. First, click the mouse once at the beginning of the desired text to place the cursor there. Then find the end of the desired text. Hold down the Shift key and click at the desired end spot. All the text in between will be selected.
- Quick way to select a single word—Double-click anywhere in a word and it is highlighted.
- Quick way to select an entire line—Click once on the left side opposite the desired line. Make sure you are far enough to the left so that the cursor has changed to an arrow.
- Quick way to select several lines—Click and hold down the mouse button on the left side opposite the first desired line. Drag the mouse down to include all desired lines and release. Make sure you are far enough to the left so that the cursor has changed to an arrow.
- Fast way to highlight an entire paragraph—Double-click on the left side opposite the desired paragraph. Make sure you are far enough to the left so that the cursor has changed to an arrow.
- Another fast way to highlight an entire paragraph—Triple-click within the paragraph.
- Quick way to highlight an entire document—Triple-click on the left side. Make sure you are far enough to the left so that the cursor has changed to an arrow.
- Another quick way to highlight an entire document—Hold down the Control key and single-click on the left side of any text.
- Quick way to select an entire sentence—Hold down the Control key and click once within the sentence.
- How to copy a block of text to another part of the document—This is another keyboard and mouse combination. Select the desired block of text. Then, holding down the Control key, click inside the selected text. Continue to hold down the Control key and the left mouse button and drag the text to the desired location. Release the Control key and the mouse button.
