Ways to Stay Fit That Don’t Feel Like Exercise

by Gloria Louden

If you’ve made exercise or moving more a goal of yours but are lacking in motivation, don’t worry. If doing an endless amount of burpees or sprints on the treadmill makes you sweat with dread, there are a number of different and alternative ways to stay fit that feel less like exercise and more like fun!

The benefits of exercising

There are so many benefits to introducing exercise into your routine – and they’re not all just health ones either. Being active has been shown time and time again to have a wealth of both physical and mental benefits, and it may even help you to live longer too! If you’re looking for an excuse to get moving, here are just some of the benefits you could enjoy…

Mood booster – who doesn’t want a boost in their mood? Exercise has been shown to improve your mood and decrease feelings of anxiety, stress and even depression.

Weight loss – regular exercise has been shown to increase your metabolic rate which in turn, helps to burn more calories and therefore helps you to lose weight.

Muscles and bones – exercise plays a key role in building and maintaining strong muscles and bones. This is essential as you grow older!

Increased energy levels – want to feel more energised? Not only can exercise boost your mood, but it can also boost your energy too.

Reduces risks – if you don’t partake in any physical activity, this can result in chronic diseases. To reduce the risk, make sure you’re moving your body regularly to improve your cardiovascular fitness and decrease your blood pressure.

Alternative exercise ideas

If the thought of lifting weights or rowing on a machine puts you off exercising, there are so many alternatives you can try. Why not set yourself a challenge like the three peaks (either national or Yorkshire), and do it in a group so you can keep each other motivated!

You could also head on the Wakefield to Doncaster train to try your hand at ice skating at the Dome. At only £7 per adult, it’s a fun-filled alternative to heading to the gym. Fancy the sound of the more exciting ways to exercise? You could even get your dancing shoes on and join a weekly dance cardio class! Boogie your way to feeling fitter and healthier in no time!

If you don’t want to feel like you’re exercising when in fact you are, you could always head to your local swimming pool. Remember, you don’t have to do lengths either to gain any benefits from it. Take your family and just enjoy time splashing around together, whether that’s doing underwater handstands, cannonballs or practising your diving skills – you’d be surprised how much exercise you’re actually getting.
